Noah Cox, 2017 winner, piano
Noah Cox, winner of the Tar River Orchestra 2017 Young Artist Concerto Competition, is seventeen years old and a high school junior at Durham Academy, Durham, NC. He began playing the piano at age six and has been studying with Ms.Tanya Smirnov of Chapel Hill, NC since 2010. Noah has won numerous local and state competitions and has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Besides leading the DA Performance Society which plays music at local nursing homes and hospitals, Noah also holds several leadership positions at school, including Junior class president, Durham Academy Executive Council, and president of the Chinese Language and Culture Club. Outside of school, Noah has been very committed to his own community in Durham and has been actively involved in volunteering, including tutoring elementary school students and teaching refugees English at the Durham Literacy Center. This past summer, Noah spent several weeks in China teaching English to low income migrant middle school students in Beijing. Deeply saddened by the educational disparities and living conditions of the migrant children there, Noah is currently in the process of setting up a fund to raise money for the school and improve conditions for the students. Noah’s other interests include beat-boxing for his school’s a cappella group, breakdancing, and acting with the Duke Chinese Theatre.
