The Tar River Orchestra and Chorus is entering their thirty-first season with a full schedule of live performances for the 2016-2017 “Tar River Live” Concert Season. The season tickets, now available, include five concerts. Two additional events are scheduled as add-on options.
The season opens in November with “Saluting Our Veterans” Friday, November 11, 2016 at 7:30 PM at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts at North Carolina Wesleyan College. “The Tar River Orchestra and Chorus along with special veteran guest speakers will honor the commitment and service of the many brave and selfless men and women of the armed forces. This stirring evening of tribute will feature an original anthem by composer John Williams, music from the HBO series “Band of Brothers”, Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” with celebrity narrator, as well as familiar patriotic selections. Come share your gratitude as we celebrate our veterans,” Tar River Orchestra and Chorus general manager Jennifer Harris said. Veterans will be admitted free to this concert.
“Sing for Joy!” will kick off the holiday season on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 7:30 PM at Fellowship Church in Nashville, NC. “The joy of Christmas will come alive when our award-winning Tar River Children’s Chorus and Youth Strings present Christmas favorites and old world carols in fresh new settings,” Harris shared. “What a delightful way for the whole family to begin the Christmas season! Come early for a seat for this popular annual concert.”
New to the mix this season is a fun family concert complete with animals. At “Musical Zoo,” the Tar River Orchestra will play selections about animals in a one-hour family concert including music from the popular movies “Jurassic Park” and “How to Train Your Dragon”. The concert will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. Make plans to visit the live animal displays, before the show, provided by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences beginning at 1:00 PM in the lobby.
On Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 7:30 PM at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts the Tar River Swing Band will celebrate 70 years of big band favorites at “Big Band Classics through the Ages”. The audience will enjoy musical selections from Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Frank Sinatra and more. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the smooth sounds of the jazz and swing music you know and love!
The Tar River Orchestra and Chorus will round out the season with an annual favorite Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 6:30 PM at the Crocker Farm located at 3358 Turkey Foot Road in Rocky Mount. “Down Home on the Farm” (formerly known as the “Chairman’s Picnic and Pops Concert”) will feature music by the Tar River Orchestra, Adult Chorus, Children’s Chorus, and special guests Carolina Tradition Bluegrass Band. “Come kick off the summer with a relaxed outdoor concert on the beautiful Crocker farm. Enjoy the folk and fiddle tunes and hoe downs, along with music from Rogers & Hammerstein’s classic musical “Oklahoma”, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, and the theme from the movie “Magnificent Seven,” Harris said. Bring the family, a picnic and lawn chairs. Gates will open at 5:00 PM.
Individual tickets for each concert are $15 for adults, or $65 per season ticket which includes all five shows. Children 18 and under, and college students with ID are admitted to each concert at no charge.
In addition to the performances in the season ticket package, tickets will be sold separately for the The Coasters Concert on February 10, 2017 at Nash Community College and a special first-of-its-kind Mother’s Day Dinner Saturday, May 13 at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount.

The Tar River Orchestra and Choral Society was founded in Rocky Mount in 1986 and has grown to include a professional philharmonic orchestra, symphonic band, swing band, adult chorus and children’s chorus, and youth strings.
